Can No Longer Drag and Drop Files or Folders

Upgraded to latest Catalina a few days ago and now I can't drag and drop files or folders on my external hard drive. I can't drag them to DropBox in the finder sidebar either.

Getting tired of all these issues every time we have to upgrade. Would be better to let us decide to proceed or shut off the notices all together.

You won't be able to write to an NTFS drive until you update or maybe just reinstall the software that allowed you to write to it. macOS has no native capability to write to an NTFS drive.

I imagine there is also something wrong with DropBox that needs an update or tweak. Maybe remove the folder from the SideBar and re-add it. I can't remember if I asked if you can drag and drop into the actual folder, not the alias in the Sidebar.

Wait, is the DropBox folder on the External NTFS drive?

I've been writing to it for over a year. It was only the last update a few days ago that it stopped working.

You keep saying that and ignoring the explanation. The software bundled with hard drives to allow you to write to NTFS are essentially crapware. They will break quite often, especially when the OS is updated. It is incompatible with Catalina and needs an update. However, it sounds like you are going to format the drive correctly, so no problem there.

It is very likely that software is what was flagged as not being supported in the next major OS. It uses a kernel extension to give you the ability to write to the NTFS drives. Kernel extensions are being phased out because they always break and cause the OS to crash. Third-party developers have proved incompetent when writing kernel extensions, so Apple is deprecating them and will not support them in the next major OS.

Anything other software that you have installed the uses a kernel extension will also not work in the next OS.

Oh yeah, it uses the NTFS software and is formatted that way too. Odd I never had to use it with my other HD book.

The DropBox deal happened last upgrade and I let it go after nobody had a solution.

I think it’s a permissions issue. Somewhere, somehow Apple changed the folder structure put this folder inside that folder and screwed up permissions.

When I go to check permissions in Terminal though it all looks good.

So I’m baffled!

They didn't pull any crap.

All of the developers of the faulty software you are depending on failed to update their software even give over six months of time to get it right.

If you don't use Windows, why leave the drive formatted for a Windows OS. That makes zero sense.

Your USB Mic should work fine, if the manufacture made it standards compliant. If it required extra software to work, then they sold you a pile of crap.

Disagree. Adobe doesn't make faulty software.

Like you said, they fooled me into thinking I needed it.

The mic hasn't worked since El Capitan. Marantz didn't know their you know what from their you know what. So, now I have to buy a new one. Yay for me.

Look, I appreciate you chiming in, but don't start an argument or attack someone you don't know or be condescending. Not with everything going on in the world.

Just not needed right now.

This is just an update. Not a solution. I came across this after looking and looking and come to find out after upgrading to Catalina it reorganized my hard drive yet again. The first time we upgraded I'm sure all of us saw two HDs.

Well, now I have a "Container disk 1" inside my SSD drive and now the two HD drives are inside that. SMH so confused. I can't believe Apple does this to us.

I'm able to drag and drop within those two directories. I just can't drag anything from say the desktop to the HD drive. I get a stop icon.

As for Dropbox I'll try removing it from the sidebar and adding it back.

I did see two notices that specific software won't be useable soon. Problem there is Apple doesn't state which. It just popped like 4 or 5 error buttons after upgrading.

I'm moving everything off the book to a folder on my desktop. Then I'll reformat the drive so that I can then delete the NTFS software and be done with that.

Thanks

I don't keep saying that. This is the first time I said that. The first upgrade to Catalina I had no issues. This the second I now have issues. By the way there's no software bundle that comes with this drive. That I'll leave at that.

It's unfortunate that you are so wrong. You must install software to write to an NTFS formatted drive on macOS. There is no other way.
