A Few Thoughts:
Just create a temporary user. See if you can then eject it.
Afterwards, remove the user. Use the “-“ button to rid of it, while logged in as another administrator.
If need be, plug the external drive into another Mac. Eject it on that device. But, prior to removing it, shutdown the Mac.
Boot into Safe Mode (Hold Down the shift key upon boot). Many preferences are set aside while booted in to Safe Mode — perhaps a preference for ejecting items.

As for Removal Via the Cursor:
Drag it over the Trash, or click on the eject button for the drive in Finder. This is on the left side of the window by default. Open up Trash to be able to access this button.
want to attach family picture discs on my Mac with external drive - watched one and now not able to eject to watch another, please help?
Have you already tried ejecting the drive from Finder?
If that fails, simply save everything and reboot. Then try ejecting again.
See if iTunes will eject it, but good suggestion from ARB4... try dragging it to the Trash.
