Cannot update from OS X

I have OS X v10.9.5 on my macbook air and am unable to install software updates. How do I fix this?

Apple uses the terminology "upgrade" to distinguish major macOS versions. Minor changes within those major versions are characterized as "updates". If no updates are available, it means your macOS 10.9 "Mavericks" version is up to date. Version 10.9.5 was its latest release.
