Macbook Air (A1466) can not recognize keyboard and trackpad

Hi, thanks for reading and trying to help.

I have a Macbook Air (A1466, early 2014), which may have a very minor water damage (few drops of water may have went into the trackpad/space bar area. I immediately followed some of the youtube video and tried to save it. And I also opened it up to examine it, and it looks like the keyboard cable is fine. However, the keyboard and trackpad is not being recognized if I boot into normal mode.

Here is a VERY helpful video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64zpJSrfEPk

Here are the weird things:

  • If I boot it up by pressing the D key, then the keyboard and the trackpad would work perfectly.
  • If I boot it up by pressing the Option key, again the keyboard and the trackpad would work as well.

However, if I let the Macbook Air boot into normal mode. The build-in trackpad and the keyboard will NOT work. Another weird thing is that if I connect the Macbook Air (via USB port) with a regular Dell PC USB keyboard, then the external keyboard will work. However, if I connect it with an Apple A1243 USB keyboard (which works perfectly with my 2nd Macbook Pro), then the external usb keyboard will NOT work.

Any idea how I can get this weird issue resolved? Would spray some Hosa D5S CAIG DeoxIT "Spray Contact Cleaner" help in some way? Thanks!

I find that the Trackpad Cable connection at the Trackpad usually becomes damaged from liquid spills or from cleaning the laptop. The Trackpad cable connector is located directly beneath the gap at the top of the Trackpad near the keyboard. If there is liquid damage or corrosion here, then the cable and Trackpad both usually need to be replaced.

If the liquid hit the Logic Board instead, then you are out of luck.

The liquid definitely damaged something by the odd behavior of the laptop. Keep in mind that you may notice more issues later on when components touched by the liquid begin corroding.

Usually when I disconnect the Trackpad cable I can see signs of corrosion on the Trackpad cable contacts where it attaches to the Trackpad. If the corrosion is only at the very end of the connection (nearest the black part) then it may be possible to clean it, but if the corrosion is on the main part of the contacts, then you have to worry about the corrosion on the contact pins of the actual connector on the Trackpad. It doesn't take much liquid (even water) to cause corrosion.

You can try the DeoxIT, but if the contacts in the connector are corroded, then I doubt it will help or be a lasting fix. The problem is it is hard to access the inside of this very tiny connector. If you have the spray on hand then by all means try it if you want. A lot of times I find the corrosion actually destroys the contact surface, but maybe you are catching it before any permanent damage has occurred.
