Printer for ageing EMac with OS10.3.9

My ageing Epson CX3650 has recently expired. The EMac is only used for word processing and spreradsheets. My new canon MX 475 - which I use with an iMac - is not compatible Can another printer be recommended or do I throw my EMac away? Or is there another alternative as I do have a lot of MS OFFICE files in Word and Excel format which I woud like to print out

It should be possible to network the eMac and the iMac, and then use file sharing to access the eMac documents at the iMac. Providing that you have word processing and spreadsheet applications on the iMac that can open the Word and Excel files, printing would take place there using the MX475.

Yes, using a USB flash drive would be yet another way of transferring files from the eMac to (for example) a Mac OS 10.11 iMac. File format lists under the Open dialogues in Word and Excel on the newer machine should indicate compatibility with older documents. This is probably not a major problem here; if necessary, you could try to convert some files to a common/generic format before transfer from the eMac. Print to (save as) PDF can also be used on the eMac.

Good luck!

Hello,

To begin with, a couple of questions:

  1. Model/year eMac? https://everymac.com/systems/apple/emac/index-emac.html
  2. Mac OS X 10.3.9 was mentioned in the title. If it is one of the eMac models capable of booting into Mac OS 9.x, do you have such system discs as well?
  3. Model/year iMac? https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
  4. Exact operating system version installed on the iMac?

Hi Nigel,

eMac (USB 2.0) - Technical Specifications

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/emac/specs/emac_1.25.html

I guess that it would be correct to assume that you have tried to set up a wireless connection at this point. Had your eMac been equipped with the (optional) internal 802.11g AirPort Extreme card, or are you using another type of device (such as a USB Wi-Fi adapter attached to the eMac)? In order to successfully connect to a Wi-Fi router, the security protocol (WPA, WPA2, etc) must be OK for all involved machines. Any information about this? Which type/model router is used?

Also, if the machines are near each other, you may want to use an Ethernet connection instead (via the LAN ports of the router).

You mentioned OS 9 on the hard disk. This would be via the Classic environment for this very eMac model (no booting into Mac OS 9).

Furthermore, it would be interesting to know the type/model/year of the other computer (the iMac) and its operating system version. This in order to verify networking and file sharing compatibility, and possibly to suggest alternative solutions.

Many thanks for your help.

In answer to your questions:

The model is an eMac, processor 1.25GHz Power PC G4

OS10.3.9(7w98)

OS9 is on the hard disc.

Can't quite remember the year; probably 2003/4. IT was purchased in the UK but now lives in France.

I have tried to set up a network but every time I type in the password of the router - the one I give to visitors to us who want to access the internet, it is refused.

Again many thanks for your help but I have a strange sentimental attachment to this old eMac.

Regards,

Nigel

Many thanks for your help and advice I have decided to get rid of my obsolete and cumbersome eMac and have purchased an upto date iMac running OS 10.15.4. My older iMac runningOS 10.11.6 will now be my business machine for wprocessing and ssheets. If I download the relevant files onto a memory stick will they be compatible with morre recent versions of MS office such as the 2016 version
