where’s the split keyboard on ipad pro 2020 11”?

I switched from ipad 2018 to the device on title and it looks like split keyboard isn’t available on this. The typing is so awkward that I have to return the device for a refund to go back. Why did you do this, it doesn’t make any sense??

iPad Pro, iPadOS 13

The Split Keyboard feature is model specific - and isn’t available on some newer models of iPad Pro:

Whilst the Split Keyboard may not be supported, maybe the new “floating” keyboard will provide an adequate workaround?

I completely understand your frustration, but for the benefit of clarity, we should be mindful that many system features are model-specific.

Split Keyboard has never been supported on 11” or 12.9” models of iPad Pro - as such, the feature has not been taken away - it has simply never been available on these models.

Given the large form-factor of the largest screen iPad’s Pro, it is possible that using these models whilst handheld wasn’t intended- or some other UI consideration inhibited its implementation.

Whilst not being able to provide a workaround for the missing feature, Apple do invite constructive comment via their feedback pages:

I hope this information has been in some way helpful - if only in understanding the model-availability of the Split Keyboard feature.

Thanks for your reply! The floating keyboard won’t unfortunately make it any better. The left side of the keyboard is too far too reach with a thumb while holding the ipad on hands. The split keyboard was perfect and it’s absolutely insane to have to go back to previous model because of that. None of the new feature make up for losing 80% of typing speed and 100% of the ergonomy.

I’m right-handed and when dragging it as close as the right edge as it goes, the left side is still too far for my thumb. If I drag it to the bottom so I can reach it better, I have to shift the position of my hand from the middle of the edge to the bottom. So typing a web address or short message forces me to juggle the ipad on my hands. And even with this arrangement, my typing speed has dropped to half due to my other thumb been idle.

I use this device because of portability, but that is taken away due to this change. If I want to type on table, I’ll just use a laptop.

It boggles my mind why apple would make the experience worse. It’s 100% in software and there’s absolutely no technical reason to remove a feature so useful. It’s enabled for my previous ipad 2018 in the same operating system version and a simple switch that has been decided for some unfathomable reason to be turned off for the ipad pro. Everything else about the new ipad pro is great but this ruins it all. Why??? 🤯 I already gave my previous one to my spouse, who began using it and now I have to ask it back after returning the new one and manage the backups.

You could extend the same hair splitting logic to claim that the feature was not taken away for example if they had the feature on ipad 2017 but not on ipad 2018. The purpose, look and feel of the device is mostly the same so it’s clearly taken away. And the whole thing is done in purpose as it must be a simple configuration switch to enable/disable it. I’m not going to buy anything apple again after this disappointment. The focus on user experience is obviously gone as a thing like this slips through the cracks.

Only thing I can imagine that was the motivation to disable the split keyboard was that they want to sell more of those keyboard covers. Why else make the experience worse.

I’m indeed very frustrated about this but at the same time greatly appreciate your quick responses and willingness to help, thank you for that!
