An Apple employee loaded the free version of Malwarebytes on my MacBook Pro some time before the lockdown. My question is do I need to pay for the premium version or just stick with the free.

The free version is all you need. The paid version allows for full time scanning, which is unnecessary and just uses system resources. If you think you may have malware run it manually.
