cant download any apps under high sierra they all say i need to update to catalina however my mac doesnt seem to support catalina.. what do i do to get catalina ???? and use the App Store again ???

It isn't clear what system you're on - if your Mac was purchased in the last 7 or 8 years you should be good to go. If it's older than that, then it may be you don't have an option outside of upgrading your machine.

Hi, I am a former AppleCare certified technician. I’ve run into the same issue with my iMac 21.5” (mid 2011). Unfortunately for the iMacs with DVD Superdrives, High Sierra is the end of the road. I should have upgraded to a 2017 model when those came out, but was impeded by poor finances at the time. Now that I’ve recovered, I am eagerly awaiting the fall lineup announcements and will be purchasing a 2020 iMac if and when they become available (otherwise I’ll get a 2019 iMac in that same timeframe).
The exact reason why you won’t be able to upgrade the software on your computer is because of Metal. Not the metal that the body of your iMac is made of, but the graphics API that your video card supports. MacOS 10.14 and above requires that your graphics card supports Metal.
