Offline Gaming (on the wifi only iPad)

I recently downloaded a game called Godfinger, not the funnest thing but it's a good little bit of entertainment. It's one of the better designed (free) games I've run across, makes good use of the iPad's bigger screen.

I was amazed to learn though that you can't even run it outside of a wifi hotspot. So any time I leave the house, go to work, or go up to my cottage, the game is unplayable. Just like a lot of apps I've run across. This may be because I'm running a free-ware version though, and purchasing a fuller game could make it available offline.

Anyway, that was the first issue, and it wasn't a big one because like I said earlier, Godfinger wouldn't be my top pick for number 1 game. I heard of another game called Plants vs Zombies, saw lots of good reviews, and apparently it won 20 game of the year awards. It costs 9.99$, which I would be willing to pay IF the game can be played offline. I can't believe that amongst 50 GB of free space and I-don't-remember-how-much RAM they wouldn't be able to run the game solely from the machine itself.

So the question (for starters) is simply this, can PvsZ only run when connected to the net?

And, if there's someone out there who is more familiar or informed than me at this, could you please tell me approximately the ratio of online-only games that are available compared to offline-playable ones.

PC (Service Pack 3), Windows XP Pro, iPad wi-fi 64GB

Well, I don't think many of us have individual experience with any specific app. Almost every app developer has a web address and/or email contact for questions. They want your business, so they'll answer you fast.

Hmm... I guess I just assumed due to the game's popularity that someone who had played would be lurking about.

But fair enough, I could address the question straight to Pop Cap. Anyone know the link to Pop Cap's forums?

I think most people who visit these forums are usually trying to find an answer to a technical issue with their iPads, helping others, or, to be honest, trolls! I think those of us who download games, usually pick up on skill games like poker or blackjack, maybe a few others. So, someone who knows about your game may be very rare around here. But you never know.

Every app developer has a link at the iTunes store. So if you click on the game, there should be two links, one to the website and one to contact the developer. Be nice, and sometimes the developer will be very nice back. You know, maybe a chance to do some beta testing for free. 🙂

(I have no idea how your quotation system works Apple...)

Would work... except that the two links available in PvsZ HD are to the main site, or to the FAQ. There is no easily discernible contact e-mail. I mean I did find one... but it looked more like a bug report contact thingy, it told me they would reply to my e-mail within a business week.

I suppose I'll just risk it, I just find it surprising this issue has drawn so little attention. Being completely unable to use certain apps when out of a wifi zone should (I would think) be a big deal to all those people who bought wifi only versions of the Pad.

It's like all those radio apps I found, they don't work at all outside of wifi spots. Which surprises me because they fit a standard radio inside the latest nano. You're telling me they didn't have room for one in the Pad, so it has to browse radio stations solely through a net connection?
