My son lost his AirPods, I only have the case. They have disconnected from the device and will not reconnect so the find my app is not working.
Dumb question of the day, Is there a way to find them?

Yes.
You might find them using your (or your son’s) eyes.
There is no automated way to find them.
Sadly, there really is only one technical option, and that’s through Find My App. I lost a single bud and there was no way to find it since the Buds aren’t traceable. Unless someone else finds them and reconnects, you won’t be able to use Find My App.
I had to get that single bud replaced in the end so hopefully everything works out and your son finds them. Cheers.
