Data transfer

I am getting a new iMac and I'm asking for suggestions on the best way to transfer most of the data from the old iMac to the new . I'm sure there is a lot of junk on the old one that I don't want to transfer to the new iMac .

Using your Time Machine backup is the best, fastest and most reliable way.

Personally I like to clear some junk off the old Mac, update and/or run a fresh Time Machine backup and then migrate from it.

If your old Mac is not running macOS 10.15 Catalina, then it may have 32bit apps which are not supported on your new computer which will be running macOS 10.15 Catalina. If this is the case, when you migrate the old system make sure to deselect the Applications and just migrate your user folder(s).
