using ipad as main texting device with no iphone involved

This one is a bit of a confusing request for info so i'm sorry if it comes off strange.

My uncle would like his mother, my grandmother, to be able to use her ipad as her main texting device. She has verizon. The problem is that she does NOT have an iphone. She has an old school flip phone.

Is there a workaround to make this possible? Could I have verizon forward all her text messages to her apple ID email so it can show up in imessages? If that is possible would we be able to edit her phone numbers to send texts through email BACK to a regular phone number?

That's where it gets weird. So here goes

Receiving

  1. friend texts grandma.
  2. Verizon, possibly, forwards text to grandma's email (appleID registered email)
  3. Text shows up in imessages

Sending

  1. Grandma composes text and sends on ipad via imessage to one of her friends that also presumably does not have an iphone. (Phone numbers will have to be edited to be in verizon email form which would be something like 8081234567@vtext.com)
  2. imessage sends text to modified email address and verizon makes sure it gets sent to the phone number via the "vtext" address.
  3. text shows up on grandma's friend's device.

I mean...is this even a thing? Is that REMOTELY possible? Again, i'm sorry if this is confusing and thanks ahead of time for any help anyone out there can offer.

With an iPad, the only texting she would be able to do is iMessage, which is between iOS devices. Anyone with a non-iOS device (Android) would not be able to text with her. She would need an iPhone to be able to text with Android devices, and could then use Text Message Forwarding on the iPhone to the iPad. The iPad then uses the iPhone to do SMS with the Android devices.

If Verizon has some type of other service that can be used off their network, which the iPad would be something to discuss with them, but I'm not aware of them forwarding text messages to email.
