Connecting a MacBook to a smart TV using a HDMI cable - HELP!

Hi everyone

I am desperately trying to connect my MacBook to a Sony Bravia TV, using a HDMI cable and an Apple USB Type-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. I don't any images on my telly! I've already tried:

  • connecting another (Microsoft) laptop - it works fine
  • various ways of switching things on and off, taking cables on and off
  • going to System Preferences / Display / Detect displays (nothing shows up)

Any ideas?

The multipart adapter is original Apple and brand new.

Many thanks in advance!

MacBook, macOS 10.15

hello luliluli1942.three things come to mind: have you tried doing a reset smc/pmu and zap pram on your MacBook ? If you look on the cable does it say hdmi 1.4 or 2.0 on it ? If you have used the adapter with a Microsoft laptop and it works fine, then the adapter is OK. What year and model of MacBook Pro do you have ? If you go to "About this Mac" it will give you a rough model number. Here is apple's suggestion (link)

and here's apple's support for the adapter itself...

usually you have to make sure the display device or the source is turned off before you make the connection or unplug anything.

that's all I have for now

Yes, it's possible you might have got a bum adapter. I'd say see if you can return it, and try another brand. Also, you may have to mess around with the HDMI settings on the Bravia tv itself. I don't know what model of Bravia you have, but you may also have to turn on "Deep Color" and press the "input" button on the tv's remote control until you get to the one into which you have plugged the hdmi cable. Apparently you also have to label the inputs as well, go to "menu", settings, then (+), setup then (+) again, then "label video inputs", press the down arrow, and choose the hdmi port your cable is plugged into, press (+) to select it, then press "menu" again to get out of that stuff. Now press the "input" button on your remote until you get to the hdmi port you assigned to the corresponding device.... and you should get a picture and sound..... if you don't get sound, make sure that HDMI is selected under Sound, then Output.......simple, huh ???

Hmmmmm.......

I'm tapped out on this one......
