Used MacBook air

my brother just gave me his old 2012 MacBook Air. I accidentally erased the Mac OS disc trying to do a system rest but I didn’t do any backing up. How can I reinstall it back on? He no longer has the original box it came in and doesn’t have the serial number either. Help please!!
