OS X can't find printer after sleep mode (wifi or wired connection) - Brother Printer

Dear All,

I am dig up an old but unsolved subject.

I have a brother MFC J4620 printer (but it is the same issue with o lot of different brand) wired connected to my LAN.

I have several Apple device running on OS X 10.15 and 10.14

Every time the printer goes into sleeping mode, My Mac mini and any OSX devices can't find any more the printer nor the scan.

what is strange is that:

  • the printer status is on "idle" and green

  • but when it comes to printing OSX can't find the printer.

you get a message saying "connecting to printer"

and when you try to get access to the scanner you get the following window:

Basically, OS X can't manage to find the printer any more.

what is also surprising is that when you ping the local IP address of the printer, you reach it and you can setup everything:

I have tried many setup find on the web such as:

  • updating firmware of the printer
  • updating brother driver for OS X Catalina.
  • enabling IPV6
  • fixing the print IP address on the LAN.
  • hard resetting of the printer.

I still didn't find the solution and I am still loosing the connection.

The only solution is to physically turn OFF and ON the printer and OS X will find again the printer.

It is obviously very painful and definitely not handy especially when you have a wired and shared printer.

Has anyone managed to solve that issue or to understand why it doesn't work?

Many thanks

Mac mini 2018 or later
