I am purchasing an ipad for my Mom. She does not have a cell phone. Can she imessage and facetime hooked up to wifi under her apple id? or, does she need a telephone number associated with her ipad?

FaceTime on ipad I’m looking to buy my elderly mother a 10.2” iPad so that we can FaceTime her to talk to her. Can we FaceTime with an ipad that is on Wi-Fi that is not on a cellular plan? Or does it need to be assigned a line on my cellular plan in order to FaceTime with her?

She can use iMessage and FaceTime with her Apple ID. However, she will not be able to SMS message anyone without an iOS device (Android). You cannot do regular texting with an iPad, unless you have an iPhone to forward texting with.
