The facial recognition won’t recognise the faces with masks automatically at first, since it hasn’t been trained to do so. On your Mac, you can add faces manually to existing people - it will be interesting to see if the new training data with masks leads to them being recognised automatically in the future.

This page has good instructions on how to do this - read the section “How to create a new People profile”: https://www.imore.com/how-use-people-and-places-photos-mac. Hope this helps!

Manually added faces are ignored and not used as training data for the face recognition. Photos is only using the faces it has recognised automatically as face to learn what a person looks like and then during the face recognition. That is why we can freely mark the back of a head or bits and peaces of a head as a face and add them to the album of a person, if we are sure, that it is the same person. It will not spoil the training data for the face recognition of the person. You can freely add the "masked" faces manually to the album of the person.

Since we are forced to wear a mask I am taking much less photos with my iPhone X11 Pro Max anyway. With the mask on my face the iPhone does not unlock automatically and I have to enter the passcode manually. it takes much longer to get the camera ready, and in the few locations we are allowed to go it is not allowed to take pictures.
