All dates in iCloud changes to future dates

OK, so here's the issue. I scanned in some old 35mm slides using a slide to digital converter. No big deal. Took the memory card and imported them into photos. I noticed that when imported, they had a date of 1916 (which was random at that). I selected all the photos I imported ( only from recent and only selected the photos I imported) and went to image -> adjust date and time. I put in todays date (4/23/2020) and hit update. It looked like it was taking a long time and photos seemed to hang. The MacBook Pro's fan started spinning on high after about 5 minutes. Something was happening, but photos was still hung so I forced quit it. I re-opened it and all of my photos (52K+ from before my son was born, like starting in 1998 from the old iPhotos) had future dated all the way up to year 2138. The years were all screwed up with no rhyme or reason and now there is no way to recover the original date and time in order to sort the photos correctly. There are random dates on my photos now from 2021 through 2138. I find photos of my son's birth in 2005 and apparently he's not being born for another 30 years. Any idea what happened to the dates on all of the photos and is there a way to recover/fix the original date/time of the photos?

Hello, pwjones99.

I understand that after a recent import and subsequent attempt to change the date of the imported content, your Mac became unresponsive. After forcing the Photos app to quit, the dates of all of your photos are now incorrect. I am also extraordinarily particular with how my photos are organized, and I’m glad to help.

Do you use iCloud to organize your photos? If not, restoring your Photo Library from a Time Machine backup is going to be the best way to resolve this. The Apple Support article, Restore a library from Time Machine in Photos on Mac, will take you through the steps to perform this task.

If you do use iCloud, which I am a huge fan of, the solution may be more complex, and I would recommend that you contact Apple Support.

I wish you all the best in this.

Be Well.

Thank you for the response. I use iCloud to organize photos. My current library has 56K+ photos from over the past 18 years. I never imagined that something like this could happen. I reach out to support and it got escalated to their senior techs and developers. They are all scratching their heads at the moment because no one can understand how it happened. Whatever happened to my library and getting thousands of random photos with random future dates (up tp 118 years in the future) has everyone at Apple stumped. I hope they can figure it out. My guess is that I tried to change a large quantity of files at once and the system could not handle it and something went really wrong. Once I hear back from them, I can post more.
