Mail cannot access your mailbox information because it’s already in use

Im trying to move my emails from catalina to a fresh install. When i open mail i get this error and clicking rebuild just brings the error back up. The mail files are not on a network and i don't have a system administrator, i have restarted.

Can anyone help me fix this ? Is it a permissions issue ?

Thanks. Alex

You might try this. Use Mail Connection Doctor - Apple Support

In addition, regarding Time Machine, before you Enter Time Machine, use the Go menu in Finder and open Go to Folder. Type in ~/Library/ and select the Mail folder. Use Get Info in the Finder/ File menu to make sure you have read and write privileges. Leave the Mail folder selected and then Enter Time Machine to see if you can restore from there.

That screenshot shows an empty Home folder on your backup disk.

You say you don't have a system administrator but there is one called Testadmin in the info label on the screen shot. Do you know the password for that or who set it up?

You could try going into Recovery mode and reinstalling Catalina, perhaps by restoring from an older backup. Better check that the backup is OK first.

Also, in System Preferences, Users & Groups, see if you can set up a new administrator account.

|The issue is when im in time machine i cant click the padlock to modify the permissions

When you're in Time Machine you cannot modify anything. Even in Finder you cannot change the backup files. You have to do that on the computer disk.

|Why do you say the home folder is empty ?

I said the home folder on your backup is empty. The info label in your screenshot shows zero bytes for your folder.

So you should check the permissions in Finder on your startup disk.

Yes from mail Catalina to Mail Catalina. The computer is the same, I have a time machine backup however i cant restore the mail folder from it. See attached i get a permissions error and i cant unlock the folder and add my admin account to access the folder.

For some reason the image will not upload here. When I'm in time machine the user library folder has a red circle, if I right click it and get info I can't unlock the folder to add my user with read write access

This is a fresh install of Catalina that im working with hence the need to get my emails back. I made the testadmin account for testing and i know the password. The issue is when im in time machine i cant click the padlock to modify the permissions, you can see this in the screenshot compare the greyed out padlock to a normal one.

Why do you say the home folder is empty ? You can see the folders in there.

Anyone got any specific advice to this situation im at the end of my wits now :(
