Macbook Air 2018 touch id stopped working after Cataline 10.15.4. When I try to add a fingerprint it gathers my id but then if I click the plus sign or select an option like user touch id to log in I get the error message below. I went ahead and reset the SMC since that was suggested on a website but nothing changed. I can power on the system by pressing the power button and type in the password but this is not working correctly.
The laptop came back with a note that nothing was found. The disk had been wiped and a new installation of Catalina installed. I went ahead and restored from the time machine backup but when I tried the touch id it did not work any better than it did when I sent the system in. Then I started having problem with Adobe Creative Cloud erroring. I could not repair or uninstall it without a lot of problem and then it froze on reinstalling. I decided that the restore just recreated the problem. I restored the system and did not use the time machine backup. In time the touch id part of the installation appeared and it worked fine. I am reinstalling apps manually as I normally do with Windows 10 reinstalls.
Did you first remove the old fingerprint?

No option to remove the old fingerprint. I contacted Apple support and they are sending a box to mail the system in for repair. Not clear if this is a hardware or software problem but they could not fix it over chat.
