Output to a Homepod stereo pair from OSX Catalina

It seems bizarre, but 2 years after the launch of the Homepod, OSX still does not support output to a Homepod stereo pair other than via Itunes. This means you can't listen to youtube videos or Netflix movies in stereo from your Macbook. It is just me that thinks this is a ridiculous oversight and that it is a fundamental issue with Homepod? Surely Homepods were intended (at least partly) for this specific purpose? It seems to me that the much vaunted Apple Ecosystem has dropped the ball here.
