the screen of my MacBook Pro is damaged. How can I connect external monitor?

Buy an external monitor, find the appropriate cable (and converter-dongle if necessary), and plug it in. Your Mac should then enable and show video on the external monitor automatically. You can then use your external monitor as a screen and follow the instructions in the link Kappy provided.
I have no access to the computer as the screen is broken. These instructions appear to require access menu etc. Is there a way around this?
