dictation

Hi I recently updated my MacBook Pro to the new Catalina system. Previously when using the dictation in word documents I could enter text while still being able to dictate. I could correct words or enter proper punctuation without having to reconnect to the microphone. Once I completed the update when dictating if I hit any button on my keyboard or mouse it automatically disconnects from the dictation function. Is there a way to make it go back to the previous setting with dictation?
