I am having difficulty getting my ipad pro to use the full screen of my Dell monitor which I currently have mirroring my screen using an HDMI cable. Is there a way to do this or a different montior or connection I should be using?

You will never get the iPad screen to fill an entire computer monitor or TV screen.
The iPad will output is native resolution which is a 4:3 ratio.
You'll never be able to change this.

That probably has to do with a match of the resolution settings between the two devices. The iPad will send out one resolution, and the monitor is set at a different one. Go into the on screen settings for the monitor and try to match them.
Wouldn't earlier computer monitors still display 4:3 ratio? Now I realize that current monitors for the most part are 16:9 widescreen, wouldn't that matter? I'm not doubting your word, I guess more being inquisitive.

I believe older 4:3 ratio monitors would fit the iPad’s screen output resolution just fine.
I have an older LaCie LCD screen monitor that is in 4:3 aspect ratio and it probably would completely fill that screen, no problem.
I don"t have any adapter/cable setup to use this older monitor with my 2009 iMac to test this out.
