MacBook Pro 2018 | Thermal Throttling | Overheating
Hello all,
I need your help and advice!
In early January of 2019 I bought a new 15", 2.9 Ghz 6-Core i9 MacBook Pro with 32 GB Ram with the additional Radeon Pro Vega 20. It was a big investment and I had good faith in how my Apple products performed in the past; big mistake.
I do occasional video editing in Adobe After Effects for my place of work. Over the last year most of my editing was done on my office computer. Upon purchase in 2019 I noticed right out of the box that it ran hot, slow and lost battery more quickly than my original 2014 MacBook. However, with my busy work schedule it worked enough to get what little video work I needed done in a pinch from home and I figured a software update would eventually fix it.
Fast forward to February 2020 and I am now working 100% from home because of COVID-19 using my personal laptop exclusively. I maybe edit 2, three minute videos a week on top of my normal graphic design work.
This thing is a lemon, I can barely use just Photoshop without it heating up, running slow and sounding like a helicopter taking off. It got so bad that I wiped my whole computer to new. I stripped everything except for the essentials for work like Photoshop, Indesign, After Effects and Word. I even clear the ram and any useless log files daily to help with performance. I'm on the latest Catalina OS update. This made about a 20% improvement, but it is still not the best. I have done everything possible I can think of from an operating system perspective except maybe trying a fan throttling application. My warranty ran out in January of 2020 :(.
Options:
- Should I trade in my MacBook for a new 2020 model? Has the thermal throttling issue been solved on the new models? Unfortunately, I don't really have the cash for an upgrade right now and my current laptop only has a trade in value of about $1,600.
- Should I hold out until the next model comes along? Logic says my laptop value will only decrease, so I won't get as much cash to use towards a new purchase. When is the next release scheduled?
- Baring sticking it in the freezer lol, are there any new solutions out there to make this lemon run better? Are there any class action lawsuits pending because clearly this was a known issue?
Thanks for your time and help!
