macOS Ventura flickering screen

I updated my Macbook Air M1 to Ventura on Monday 24 Oct. Within a few hours my screen started to flicker. I rebuild the machine using a USB drive (Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support) After a few hours it started again. I notice this happens when I am using IntelliJ Idea Ultimate. Has anyone else encounter this issue? Perhaps when doing something that will use up a lot resources? I don't mind going back to Monterey I just hate the long process of rebuilding/setting up a machine.

I had the same issue and I think I found the cause, in my case I am fairly certain that an app "QvRPRO client" was causing the flickering - I used to have this app running all the time and now I have close it and the flickering disappeared. I am watching it an it has been six day with no screen flicker. You may have an app that is the cause. Hopefully this repay helps.

I highly recommend everyone start their own thread if it does not directly resolve osito2's issues.

Keep in mind flickering can be due to a number of issues:

  1. Ambient light may be out of sync with the refresh rate of the monitor. You can modify the refresh rate of the monitor to some degree on Apple menu -> System Preferences (or System Settings) Displays or with a utiltiy such as EasyRes.
  2. Connectors to displays may be loose or of poor quality. I've had significant trouble with Insignia cables from Best Buy. Better cables by Belkin and other vendors exist. Adapters can create problems for cables that are insufficiently powered.
  3. Electricity in older homes may pose difficulty without a third prong power connector or UPS unit able to manage the power output of desktop machines and their monitors.
  4. Some games may be geared towards specific refresh rates or graphics chips. Look carefully at the software specifications to ensure it allows for mobile graphics chips if using a notebook or Mini.
  5. If the flicker is present in recovery mode, then you know it is more likely a hardware issue. command-R boot lets you do recovery mode on July 22, 2011 and later Macs. You do not need to do anything else with recovery mode except to test if the issue is anything to do with drivers or hardware specific.
  6. Keep in mind Macs keep a hardware warranty when purchased new free longer than software. Call AppleCare if you are sure it is hardware, and you are sure no accident could have caused it. AppleCare+ offers limited accident protection if purchased. Apple also sometimes offers exchange-repair programs to deal with graphics issues for outside of warranty coverage.

Short of these six major things, a new thread explaining how you first noticed the issue, with what software, and what was done to isolate the issue can help all of us determine if you have a hardware or software issue.

I am having constant flickering on ESO game and some just searching on Safari with my 2019 MacBook Pro. It started right after Ventura update. I have restarted multiple times and no relief from flickering at all. I have no idea what to do about it. I just called my computer repair store to see what they said and they haven't heard about it happening after the update but thought it sounded like a hardware problem and of course they said bring it in and they would check it out for $69.95. 3 years old and out of warranty, figures.

Don’t upgrade to OS Ventura if you have a 2017 Macbook Pro and you use a mirrored screen or TV as it causes problems with no option to turn off Automatic Graphics Switching if you have just the 1 default graphics card

Apple cites that a 2017 Macbook Pro can be upgraded to Ventura which it can, but it renders mirroring impossible, which is pretty vital for many of us.

I upgraded from High Sierra to Ventura 13.1 & tried all suggestions out there, before having to downgrade which isn’t easy, if you don’t erase the whole disk (causes Incompatible Disk Message when you do get back to where you were, if like me you only erased/formatted Macintosh HD)

Upgrading to Monterey 12.1 wasn’t straightforward either and a USB bootable installer needs to be used in Safe mode (shift) to complete without error

Also your time machine backup you made in Ventura can’t be ‘seen’ by High Sierra but will, when you upgrade to Monterey which also restores your laptop’s ability to mirror to screen or TV
