Software update

My macbook air is telling me there is not enough space to update. Does that make my old computer redundant

Not necessarily. Read How to free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support.

In addition to its recommendations be sure to empty Trash in applications that manage their own Trash: Mail, Photos, etc.
