If I have an external monitor with a camera, can I use the monitor's camera instead?

I recently broke my MacBook's screen, so I bought an external monitor with a camera. I'd like to use the monitor's camera so I can close the laptop. Is this possible?

If the camera in the external monitor is recognized, you should be able to choose it in the app.

For instance, FaceTime will allow you to choose the camera in the Video menu. However, if there is only the built-in camera, there will not be another choice.
