IPad mini 4. Is it possible to plug in an external hard drive. I’ve been told yes, and no. If yes what cables do I need? Thanks

Thank you very much. I was told by an “Apple” guy at BestBuy that it wouldn’t work. So before going out and buying miles of cables I wanted to make sure it did.
