Airplay 2 sound delay

Does anyone know of a fix for sound lag when using ATV 4K and iOS. I have a HomePod stereo pair behind the sofa either side, and an airplay 1 speaker which is connected to an airport express to enable airplay 2 under the the TV.

Playing music through music on my MacBook is perfectly in sync for all however when playing through iOS or Apple TV the sound on both the non-Apple speaker and the TV are both out of sync from the HomePods. Doing the sound sync on Apple TV makes very little difference.

The speakers in other rooms being out of sync doesn't bother me but my speakers create a sound that the HomePod couldn't parallel but I still want to be able to come as close to having surround sound as I can with airplay in the living room.
