Files App on PadOS crashing when copying large files from SDCard. -- Cannot load representation of type com.apple.Document-Manager.uti.FPItem.File

I recently picked up an iPad Pro 11 (second edition) and have twice now had the Files app crash into a state that it cannot be repaired but with a format reinstall/restore from iCloud. This takes away an entire day of productivity and $$ out of pockets of those who rely on their iPad for work.

Both times I have connected a Baseus USB-C dock made for iPad to it. Then inserted microsd card into the slot. Found my media, selected all the files ( 15-25 ish files ranging from 1mb to 4GB), then choose the `Copy` function which then freezes the Files app leading to the crash and message

"Cannot load representation of type com.apple.Document-Manager.uti.FPItem.File" is the error I am getting.

I have seen a few others with this issue with a resulotion of wiping/restoring. That cannot be the right answer for this issue. Does Apple Support get involved with the forums?

Try resetting iPad's settings in Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. Be certain you do not select Erase All Content and Settings as this will erase all of your information. It is a good idea to perform a backup of your iPad prior to resetting its settings.

I have already completely wiped the iPad this time. I will try that next time but I feel it's a bug in the system that cannot handle large file copies. I have copied 8gb of files or so no problem. Its when I tried to copy 56GB of misc files some being 4gb (its all gopro and insta360 video) is when the File app locks up and then crashes leading to the error trying to bring up the context menu in the app.

There are very few shows where I could rewatch the entire series over and over!

I will say from personal experience that sometimes iPad’s Files application and associated document pickers can some times become overwhelmed and reset. The only solution I have in those instances is to fully restart my device however you have stated that you have done this without success which leads me to assume that its a bug and would need to be resolved in a future system software update.
