Switch between earphones and speakers

On an imac with Catalina, can I plug in earphones and switch between the speakers and earphones using the sound preferences ? When I plug in the earphones, the "internal speaker" option disappeaars from the output Sound Preferences.

Sorry no, would require a real switch in the Headphone line.

How to switch on and off the headphone jack on Mac OS (imac) I have my iMac on a desk against a wall, and it's very inconvenient to access the headphone jack (and all the connections in back). The only way to do access the connections on back is by moving the whole computer. I have a hub for all the other connections, but it doesn't include the headphone jack. So I attached a short extension cable to the headphone jack, and I can plug in my headphones to that when I want to use them. When anything is plugged into the headphone jacks on my computer, the computer external speakers are automatically turned off. The problem is that sometimes I want to hear the computer speakers, and I can't find anyway to do so except by unplugging the headphone extension cord, which, as I mentioned, is very inconvenient. Is there a way I can switch on and off the headphone jack (and the external speakers) using the computer desktop interface? Thx.

internal speakers don't show up as option in System Preferences/Sound Internal speakers don't show up as a device option for sound output. In the list of options, the first is a line, next is AirPort Express, then Apple TV. When I plug in headphones through a USB port, they don't appear as an option either. I am using High Sierra, OS version 10.13.6, machine is from late 2015.

Default sound output mac OS 11.3.1 Having an issue with sound output- I select the iMac to use HomePod pair as sound, but constantly have to redo the setting- Pause what you're listening to (music, podcasts, etc), and it defaults back to the computer audio. Found a post somewhere saying to hold OPTION when you click the speaker pair, no luck. On a 2019 21.5 iMac, Big Sur 11.3.1.
