internal speakers don't show up as option in System Preferences/Sound

Internal speakers don't show up as a device option for sound output. In the list of options, the first is a line, next is AirPort Express, then Apple TV.

When I plug in headphones through a USB port, they don't appear as an option either.

I am using High Sierra, OS version 10.13.6, machine is from late 2015.

Is something plugged into the iMac's headphone jack?

If there is unplug it and check the sound preference.

If something was recently plugged into the iMac's headphone jack, then perhaps the micro switch inside of the headphone jack is stuck. If that is the case, then try plugging and un-plugging headphones or something in and out a few time to see if the micro switch un-sticks.

If that doesn't help, try resetting the NVRAM, as per > Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
