If I had my airpods paired to my iPhone, lost them, now they’re popping up on find my app under someone else’s name, is there anything that can be done to locate them and have them recovered?

How do you know yours are turning up under someone else's name? You have to be within 40 feet to see them so I take it this is someone you know? If that is the case contact the police, give them the name of the person and the serial number of your AirPods.
I was just thinking that airpods or Apple Watches usually won’t pop up on find my app unless they’ve previously been paired to your iPhone. So with that I’m assuming that they are mine and have been renamed.
