Other Volume Space Issue

Using Disk Utility my Macintosh HD is showing 90gb used for "other volumes" form a capacity of 120gb. Can anyone help in reducing the size of the volume as it's using up valuable space. I must add that I used a TarDisk that was fused to my HD but then reformatted my HD and now use the Tardisk as a separate drive if that helps?

So I have found where a lot of my space was being held ransom! I used DiskDrill a while ago to recover some files and apparently DD keeps a portion of space for "recovery" purposes. I found a folder called .cleverfiles which ahd over 250,00 files and used up 45gb of space. I deleted the folder and voila I now have 60gb free space in my HD. The only issue I have found so far was the my Internet Accounts disappeared in settings until I rebooted. If I find any more issues I will provide and update but so far so good!

Hi, and thanks for your reply!

I have emptied the trash, and used ccleaner regularly to empty old files and caches etc. and I do not have any snapshots. I don't have any large files eating up the space, have no Apple back ups or any old photos etc. When I get info on the users>myname folder it says that it is 21.2gb but I only have about 3 gb of data in that folder. Using Omni it gives me a size of 60gb for the Macintosh drive so I don't understand the differences to be honest!

Have you emptied the trash?

Are there local backups?

Purging local backups

Please note that although this doesn't affect your remote backup from Time Machine, this will get rid of the redundancy (at least until the next Time Machine backup) that a local backup disk will provide. If you need such redundancy or are worried about the recovery of your data then you would be best served to let macOS determine when to purge these files.

Start Terminal from spotlight.

At the terminal type tmutil listlocalsnapshotdates.

Hit enter.

Here, you'll now see a list of all of the locally stored Time Machine backup snapshots stored on your disk.

Next you can remove the snapshots based on their date. I prefer to delete them one at at time. Once my "System" disk usage is at an acceptable level, I stop deleting but you can delete all of them if you want to reclaim all of the disk space.

Back at the terminal, type tmutil deletelocalsnapshots YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS , where will be one of the dates from your backup. This will be in the form of xxx-yy-zz-abcdef. Try to start with the oldest snapshot.

Hit enter.

Repeat for as many snapshot dates as required

OmniDiskSweeper shows you the files on your drive, largest to smallest, and lets you quickly Trash or open them.
