Migration to my new MacBook Pro

After some research about migrating from my old to new MacBookPro I would assume that migration assistant probably is better than cloning. Now the question is what is the fastest method? Since both computers have Thunderbolt I would imagine linking both together with a Thunderbolt cable to have the fastest transfer speeds. Ok, so since I don't want to spend the $$$ on a Thunderbolt cable can I just use my 1TB SSD (APFS Encrypted) Thunderbolt clone drive connected directly since it has a built in Thunderbolt cable? Or just stick to wifi. Thanks in advance.

Cloning is faster and more reliable than Migration Assistant.

Clone El Capitan and Later using Disk Utility

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately, at or before the chime press and hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo and progress bar appear. Wait until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu, then click on the Continue button.
  3. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  4. Select Restore from the Edit menu of Disk Utility. A panel will drop down.
  5. Select the source volume from the dropdown menu in the panel.
  6. Double-check that you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

You can also clone using Carbon Copy Cloner.

My solution for setting up my new MBP.

Clone my 2017 MBP 13" to a Thunderbolt SSD.

Connect the drive via the attached Thunderbolt cable to my new 2020 MBP 16".

Use the Thunderbolt SSD for migration assistant.

Transfer speeds were over 200MB/sec.

Better than the ponderous setup connecting both MBPs over an ethernet bridge that would have also required purchasing a $25 Thunderbolt cable. The Thunderbolt SSD cam with a built in cable.
