You can use Apple Pencil (2nd generation) with these iPad models: 

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation) and later

You can use Apple Pencil (1st generation) with these iPad models:

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch

To clarify, 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro models - featuring FaceID and a USB-C connector - cannot be used with a 1st Generation Apple Pencil.


The 1st Generation Apple Pencil can only “pair” with the host-iPad via a Lightning port - which the 2018/2020 iPad Pro models are lacking.


2018 and 2020 instead use the 2nd Generation Apple Pencil - that both “pairs” and charges via an inductive pad on the edge of the iPad.
