How to delete back up of old phone from icloud of present phone

I gave my old iphone away to someone I don't know but its data is taking up space in my new phone's icloud. The new owner must have a new apple id by now.

So there are now 2 backups on my new phone, one for the present phone and one for the phone I gave away. When I tried to turn off and delete the backup of the old phone, it does not allow me to do so.

What can I do to delete it to free up space in my icloud?

Hey ChemBioteacher,

If I understand correctly, you’re unable to delete a backup, associated to an old iPhone, you no longer have access to? Is that correct? If so, I can see why that would be an issue. Especially since the backup is taking up your iCloud storage space.

Did you follow the recommended steps before giving away or selling the iPhone?

When you attempt to delete the backup, are you experiencing a spinning gear?

Have you tried deleting the backup on multiple iOS devices using your iCloud account?

Take a look at the articles listed below. If you continue to run into complications, I would suggest reaching out to Apple Support directly. They’ll be best suited to help take a closer look at your account, and that backup.
