iPhone XS Max full memory Error 14

I’ve got a serious problem with my iPhone XS Max 256 Gb

It started when my phone memory was full and it was working too slowly. I rebooted it, and it got stuck in a boot loop (apple logo). I then tried to put in in Recovery Mode and update it via Mac/PC (It did not have the latest iOS). The upgrade failed halfway through with Error 14. Then I opened the iPhone and disconnected the LCD etc., but still, Error 14 appeared when I was trying to upgrade. Now it is stuck in Recovery Mode.

I've read a lot of messages from people who have the same problem! We need a skeleton IOS for this situation! Apple have really made a mistake in allowing a phone to reach such a full capacity

It is a tragedy to lose my photos and videos!!! There are the best moments of my life in this locked phone! I need help!

Support service recommended me to restore my phone with no opportunity to save my data! That’s completely impossible! My photos and videos were an integral part of my life. There should be the way out! Help me, please!

All, I found a good how-to inside one of apple forums here, just in case you think I’m trying to damage your phone downloading a malicious software, this trick is legit (search for thread 5180100, page 3, “My phone has gone into recovery mode...”). For my case it didn’t concluded the download but since it reached almost 97% of loading bar, my phone turned back on.

To anyone who is searching through this post looking for an answer to the original question, let me tell you this. NO.. YOUR INFORMATION IS NOT GONE AND YOU CAN STILL GET IT BACK. If your iphone is stuck in recovery mode, you can still get your photos, contacts, and any other information needed back again.

I know you're probably frustrated like I was of people saying things like "just restore from back up", or "you have to restore the iphone first to get it working again"...or suggesting tools like Dr. Fone, and TinyUmbrella which don't work at all because the phone isn't being recognized in Windows explorer or by the USB in general.

This is what you have to do. Repeat, this is ONLY for an iphone that is able to be turned on an all you get is the usb plug saying plug into itunes screen (the Recovery Mode screen).

This process is for Windows. I think some MAC users will be able to follow it also, but the instructions are for PC users.

1.) Turn your iphone on if it isn't already.

2.) Load up itunes (make sure you have the latest Itunes. I would even suggest that you uninstall your itunes if it isn't up to date, through Control Panel Add/Remove programs, and then go to the Itunes website and download the latest version.)

3.) When you load up Itunes, it will tell you that your iphone needs to be updated or restored. Just click okay or cancel to get that dialog box out of the way. Then just minimize the itunes for right now.

4.) Download the firmware (just type on your browser example “firmware iphone 11 pro max”) for your correct model of iphone (remember to download IOS 14.2, NOT 14.3). Just choose your model from the drop down boxes. Once you've chosen everything, click the Download button. It will produce a link. Just click the link and take note of where that file downloads on your computer.

5.) Once the download finishes, go back to Itunes...and you'll have two buttons to click... Restore and Update. VERY IMPORTANT: Hold down the SHIFT key and click UPDATE (SHIFT + UPDATE) .

6.) A box will pop up to search for a file. Navigate to the folder that you downloaded the firmware file in step 4 to. And choose that file.

7.) Then Itunes will tell you things like Blah blah..this file might not work, if your phone can't be updated it will have to be restored....blah blah. Just click OK through all of that and start the update.

8.) Your phone will update to the latest firmware after a pretty lengthy process, maybe about 30-40 mins. Could be longer, but it will work. Don't get anxious, don't unplug the iphone because you think it's frozen or something. There will be times when it seems like it's not doing anything. Just sit back, put on a netflix movie, and continue to monitor the process from time to time. Soon your iphone will turn back on...and everything will be updated and back to normal.

BACK IT UP IMMEDIATELY!

I hope this works for a lot of you out there, and I hope it gives those of you like me who felt there was no hope.......a little bit of relief.

Hey, I´m just answering this because I promissed I would tell the world if it worked. I had same issue, during a travel with several photos each day, on the last day my phone started to crash the apps and I did what I usually do, turned off my phone. When I turned back on it got stuck on apple logo and nothing showed on these tutorials worked. I even put my phone on rice thinking it could be a water problem (this would be last reason since I have a Pro Max 11 waterproof). I started to see the tutorials to update the phone through Itunes and then error 14 started to appear. As I was not paying any attention to my storage space it was likely this was the issue. I read thousand of websites and youtube tutorials about this problem and started to feel spoiled for almost crying for a few photos lost, I was certain I would not recovery the not backed up photos. BUT THEN...

I had an idea, the last one before finally restoring the iphone and losing the data... I saw several tutorial showing how to update the software on itunes downloading a firmware available for your device model. When I tried the first time I chose the last version available IOS 14.3 (6.36 GB) and during the update it didn´t surpass more then 1/3 of the loading bar. Since the issue is the low storage space I thought that maybe if I choose the IOS 14.2 (6.29 GB), version my phone was updated before, since it requires less space it could work out. I was hopeless when started the update and for my surprise the apple loading bar was almost 95%. I waited for a few minutes and then Itunes stopped and showed Error 6. It did not take long (about 10 min), I was searching tutorials to fix error 6 when MY PHONE TURNED ON AFTER 3 DAYS STUCK ON APPLE LOGO. It may not work for all cases but since I saw thousands of desperate users, it could maybe help a few.

Hi, all.

Wanted to share my experience on this. At some point, one of my iPhone 11 pro max has stuck in the same situation: too much photos, the phone was complaining on the space and after reboot it has stuck on an upgrade with error 14.

For me all ended in a good way! :)

Tried several times through iTunes on several Windows machines, tried 3rd party software with custom images. No result - all of them failed with the same error. 3rd party was showing detailed error, iTunes was just showing error 14.

But. In the very end, I tried to do the restore on MAC/iTunes. And it worked!!!! After the upgrade there was a status "Attempting to restore data" for a short period - and shortly after I had all my precious photos back :)

So, in the nutshell, the key is not the cable and not the 3rd party(really no need to pay) - try it on different computers and be persistent.

If you don't have a MAC - maybe your friends do - just like in my case. I don't know what was the key difference - the Mac or just another computer, or just a LOT of attempts.

Keep trying - don't settle :) Good luck to everyone!

Hello,

Connecting to your computer should work. Try a different cable or port:

iTunes error 14 may happen when you have a USB connection issue. Try a different USB port on your computer or use a different USB cable. You'd better use the original Apple Lighting USB that came with your device. And you can text the USB cable on another computer.

Good luck.

“....If you restore, you will lose all your data ....”

Maybe. The process of recovery when frozen will usually have the following option...

“When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update. Your computer will try to reinstall iOS or iPadOS without erasing your data.”

So maybe the Mac will allow update where PC will insist on restore. Just a possibility worth trying if you can borrow a Mac.

Probably grasping at straws tho.

The solution was to backup to icloud or your computer ...

  1. every couple of weeks
  2. before every update

This protects against all loss including theft, breakdown, and water ingress.

If you don't have a computer, and many don't these days, consider an iCloud subscription.

It's terrible to lose precious photos, but there is no solution once the phone is bricked or lost. This applies to all phones of any make and even digital cameras.

Hey guys!

After having the problem with XS MAX, I had the same issue with 11 PRO MAX, after full memory warning I couldnt do anything, it dis not let me erase any photos, or even i remove all apps nothing changed. Phone closed itself and stuck on apple logo.

Luckily, I was backing up everything regulary and first thing I tried to update phone connecting to PC, and as expected update stopped and Error 14! appeared due full memory.

Next step, I restored and let it download everything from my icloud account without any problem.

So, I am sorry but there is no other way than restoring your phone ( if you havent backed-up photos I am sorry but you will lose all your photos and the rest:)

I really dont understand that why those super clever(?) apple guys still are not coming with a solution for this serious problem.

It is very weird that with ios 14.01, there was a problem with calculator that app was not letting you to type and see number ‘0’ after decimal point and those super genious apple guys solved this hard problem with recently released ios 14.1.

I really like iphone and planning to buy 12 pro, and I watched the Tim Cook’s big event, this fastest greatest phone ever commercial, but knowing the same problem will also happen with this fastest Iphone ever(?) I am sorry but I had to say that ‘ Hey you super clever apple guys, you dont deserve to be a member of apple or any kind of apple platform, you are just a shame for your company for not listening people here!’

Same scenario for me

  • Reached memory full while making a video
  • Impossible do delete photos or videos
  • Impossible to empty trash
  • Impossible to remove an app to free space
  • Restarted my iPhone XS max hoping to be able to empty the trash
  • It remained stuck in the Apple logo loop
  • Firmware update stops half way using original Apple cables
  • Tried with other Apply cables
  • Tried different USB ports on my Macbook Pro
  • Tried Firmware 14.01, 14.1 and 14.2 to no avail

It is a shame that a very pricy and a great device such as the iPhone XS max will "crash" on a simple "storage full" where any $100 Android device would allow you to do something about it.

It is a big deal considering the price. I can't help to think that it is done deliberately to force us consumers to buy the iCloud service. Being an software engineer myself, I can't think of why we should limit the life of your data on your phone to be determined by the time of reaching the storage capacity.

It is unacceptable for a product of such price and quality to be limited programmatically to force aggressively consumers to buy the iCloud subscription that keeps on popping each time when you have reached the max Free sync.

In one word, shame. Also what to think of the team that actually designed the device. A friend with an older iPhone (version 5) had coincidentally the same issue the same day, and he was able to restart and delete picture.

Sorry for the rank, it's been 3 weeks that I am in denial that the only solution is to forget about my data and move on to Android.

Tried 3rd party software iMyPhone Fixppo and failed. They agreed to reimburse 50% of the software. So don't even try. DrFone says that they can fix Error 14, but if it doesn't I guess it will be difficult to get a refund.

Yes - exactly. Just like in my case - many attempts on Windows - then success on Mac. Maybe the key is to try on Win, then try on Mac, maybe the key is try a lot of times on Win, then try on Mac, maybe it's just Mac that works (but I don't think so - I've read about similar issues on mac as well).

As we don't know the underlying processes - we can't tell what exactly works, but for everyone stuck with memory full on iOS 14 upgrade I would suggest keep trying to perform the update on different computers with different OS (Win - Mac).

Hello

I also had this dumb problem today!! Ruined my day

Here's what helped me, not sure which helped what

1) On my windows laptop it would not restore at all / gave the error

2) I tried it on a mac book and an error came saying there is not enough storage on my iphone I believe, I don't know if it was saying on my phone or the macbook in question did not have enough space..

3) Fortunately I had icloud open on my laptop.. so I started deleting loads of pictures/ high sized videos...

4) I tried to restore and it worked on my Macbook

Fortunately I had an icloud backup from yesterday so cant complain...
