MacOS Extended Journaled Encyrpted Question

I know I want encryption - but I don't know which flavor to choose. I have an ordinary setup - macOS Mojave, and a 2015 MacBook Pro.

Should I pick APFS, Extended/Journaled or Case Sensitive Extended/Journaled?

Does it matter much?

Time Machine drives - APFS & Mac OS Extended My MacBook Pro 16"'s internal drive is formatted APFS running Big Sur 11.2.2. I have two Time Machine drives. One is apparently APFS (Case-sensitive) and the other Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted); I'm not sure why the are not both the same. I want both to be encrypted in case they ever got stolen and suspect 'case sensitive' is not appropriate. I also suspect that both should be APFS. Should I erase both Time Machine drives and reformat them both as APFS Encrypted (not case-sensitive)?

Encrypting APFS Time Machine volumes Is it necessary to encrypt APFS Time Machine volumes on Big Sur and up if File Vault is on? Let me try to explain why I'm asking this: I clearly remember warnings came up when I tried to use unencrypted disks with Time Machine when File Vault was on. No such warning comes up on Big Sur and up as far as I remember. So I presume Apple reckons not having encryption doesn't compromise the security of APFS Time Machine backups. This is how I think it works: As you know, Time Machine snapshot format on Big Sur has changed (individual files on HFS+ volumes vs. some sort of "virtual file system" on APFS volumes.) Now that backups are comprised of virtual file systems instead of individual files, File Vault encryption is somehow applied to them, so no Mac other than the one they are created on can access them if File Vault is turned on, thus eliminating the need for encryption. Am I correct or am I totally making this up?

SanDisk SecureAccess 3.02 vs. macOS encryption (hardware AES)? Hi, I bought the SanDisk 1TB “extreme portable SSD” and used macOS to format & encrypt it in the following manner: APFS /encrypted. SanDisk’s blurb about “hardware encryption” has me wondering if I should have used their software instead of the mac’s? Im skeptical about their software. Can I assume that my method just uses the slower software method, OR is macOS smart enough to talk to the hardware chip on my SSD? Any guidance is appreciated. v/r

APFS should only be used on SSDs. HDDs should use HFS+. If you need to encrypt data, then full disk encryption is the best ways to go. If you are formatting an HDD like yours, then use Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted.)
