I tried to reset the SMC. When i hold all three buttons plus power, the green light remains constant with no flashing. However once i release them, the flashing continues. No change
That LED is set to green or amber or off based on a command sent from the computer, over the "charge control pin", also used for the power adapter to send its identity and capabilities.
flashing may indicate a bad connection or debris in the connector on the computer, which is where the magnet is located.

what is this exact Mac that you are using ?
What is the condition of your Battery? Anything but Condition : Normal needs to be replaced.
Hold the Option key and click the batt icon in the upper right menubar...
Yes the trouble shooting HT above, guides you towards checking for debris in the MagSafe connector and computer side as well.
I can add that—Macs of the mid 2012 (?) vintage are old enough to start seeing "worn-out" issues with the DC inboard. This component is a replaceable part attached to the logic board.
If your issues continue with no resolve have it inspected.
The magnet and pins are clean. I also checked to laptop to see if there was an obstruction. There is not
