I got a new battery from authorized Apple Dealer not Apple itself in Feb this year. I leave it connected to power so it should be at 100%. It shuts down when it is unplugged and shows red and plug in symbol. When it opens up after plugging in shows it has plenty of charge. Battery symbol disappears and have to keep adding it.

How long have you charged the battery before taking it off the mains? You should leave it plugged in overnight to ensure it gets charged.

If it doesn't get charged, make sure it shows as charging in the upper right hand corner icon for the battery.

You may need to run coconut battery to determine if your new battery was genuinely new.
