Apple Mail, How can I clear an empty Flagged mailbox indicating 3 flagged messages?

As I remember on my 2014 MacBook Pro, I was exploring the option to flag messages. Then moved on to other things, leaving 3 messages flagged. Later I was doing a “house” cleaning of unwanted messages, in so doing I deleted the previously flagged messages in the originating mailbox. I then emptied the trash and have no reasonable way to try and recover them. This left me with an empty Flagged Mailbox indicating 3 messages… How can I clear the 3 indicated, but non-existing flagged messages? Note neither my 8Plus or 2011 iMac show a Flagged mailbox.

From your post, I see that you have an issue with flags remaining in an email account while there are no emails flagged. I want to help.

First, I recommend rebuilding your mailbox with the steps here: Rebuild mailboxes in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Then try removing the email account and adding it back in again. This article has the steps to Add or remove email accounts in Mail on Mac - Apple Support
