How can I eject a CD when there is no icon

Restart your machine, and hold down the mouse button as it starts up again. This should eject the CD.

If not, you can open the CD drawer by placing a thing object (such as a straightened paperclip) into the small hole on the from of the CD drive. It takes a bit of a wiggle, but should release the drawer.

open terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)

at the prompt type:
diskutil list
(press return)

See if your dvd disk appears on the list.
if there,
to eject it:

diskutil eject <name ofdevice>

example (If its bsd name is /dev/disk4) :
diskutil eject /dev/disk4

If it is not on the list, you will have to reboot before Disk Utility Framework will be able to see
it again.

...and just for yucks:

1. Open iTunes, and hit cnd+E

2. Go to System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/, and double click on "Eject.menu". This places a menu icon that lets one eject whatever is in the optical drive.

It is not in System Preferences. Click on the 'Macintosh HD' icon on the desktop.
From the window that opens, click on "System".
From the window that opens click on 'Library' (should be the only item in this window)
From the window that opens, click on 'Core Services'.
From the window that opens, click on 'Menu Extras" (a folder)
From the window that opens double click on 'Eject menu' as scb says.

Incidentally there is also in the same window as 'Menu Extras' an icon for 'Directory Utilities'. That is the app that is used to enable root per the GUI. Apple has a longer method to enable root through System Prferences. A tip appearing when Apple made a' major' change to the 'Users' routines was to place a shortcut for this app into the dock. You do that by simply dragging the icon (the app does not move) into the dock. BE CAREFULL the items in core services are rather important be careful when spoaching in it. Do not do this 'dock' routine in a non admin log in. You should only be so 'administering' the computer in an admin user. Also beware that root can just about wreck the computer if handled wrongly.

These are great directions and with a little time, I worked my way through them but, when I double clicked on the "eject menu" nothing happened. I have a laptop, so I can't try to open the CD drive. I have rebooted a couple of time. Anymore suggestions?

I know what you mean. I worked through them also and when I double clicked on the "eject menu" nothing happened. I have tried all of the suggestions to get this disc to eject and it just won't do it. Surely there is something out there that will work.
