Work on iMovie from a USB-3 external HDD

Is it feasible & reliable to work on iMovie v.10 using an external HDD over a USB-3 connection?

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.14

Thanks AirGraph! I’m considering using an older WD My Passport Ultra 1TB previously used for Time Machine on a previous MB Pro.

How do I best prepare the external HDD for iMovie? Just now I had to Shut Down in order to eject it, so something’s not quite right—I’m guessing it’s trying to find the proper device to perform a backup…?

You are welcome.

If you don't need this HDD for Time Machine select another one for this purpose (System Preferences->Time Machine), backup your system and then erase first one as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) file system HDD. Disk Utility will help you.

If you want to use this disk simultaneously for iMovie and for backup I think that is bad idea… ;-)
