New Apple Watch purchase

My Mother has a iPhone 6 Plus, version iOS 12.4.6 and she just purchase an Apple Watch - Series 5. When we are attempting to pair her phone to the watch, it keeps telling us her phone is not up to date and sends us to update it. When we get to the update, it says we are up to date. Can anyone help us with this as we cannot get out due to the coronavirus. Thank you in advance,

An apple watch 5 requires a phone with ios13 or higher which is an iphone 6s or higher,your 6 plus will only update to ios12 so the watch won't work with your phone.
