Hi i don't seem to have the overlay button in my iMovie "latest update" as the picture shows the overlay button is missing...one thread suggested to go to /edit/paste adjustments/video overlay settings but as its greyed out
any help much appreciated

Place a clip above existing in timeline. Select upper clip and you will see overlay button.
