Apple Watch band

My mom has a 38mm series 3 Apple Watch. The band is a little too tight around her wrist though. If I purchase a 42mm band, will it give her more space and is it compatible with the 38mm?

It will not fit on the 38mm. Measure her wrist and then see if there is a band with that length.
