Screen extend between MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018) and iMac 2011 not working

Hi, I'm trying to setup screen extend between my MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018) and my iMac 2011. I am using thunderbolt cable, with a dongle to connect the MacBook. The extra display is not detected. Any ideas on this please?

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.12

Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to thunderbolt 2.

I imagine the 2011 is running 10.13.6 or less?

Yes, it’s running Sierra 10.12.3

My MacBook is running Catalina 10.15.4
