macbook air 2017 charger heating up seriously.

The 2017 MacBook Air is supposed to use a 45W MagSafe 2 power adaptor. How can you use a 87W power adaptor on it? Are you sure about your MacBook and power adaptor models?

In any case an overheating power adaptor is not normal and most likely unsafe.

There is something wrong:

assuming the connectors are equal:

when the standard charger is 45W (Apple charger) it should not heat much, when you use a more powerful charger 85W from Apple(!) it should not heat at all !

The OP said a 87W then a different connector.

As for a more powerful charger heating less, it doesn't always work that way. Take light bulbs for a very simple example.

I know that. It was not a comparison. Just a - maybe too - simple example that more power doesn't mean less heat dissipation.

For power adapters, onboard control logic can be a more important factor as you said.

It is normal that a power adaptor generate heat. But if you think it becomes too hot, I suggest you contact Apple. As for a replacement, they will tell you.

Don't compare with lightbulbs: the Apple chargers and macs are programmed to do what it should, nothing more nothing less, protected.

Did the SMC reset, proposed by Leroy, help?

You can do that 2 or 3 times for cocky macs...

If that does not help, try another charger, to see if it is the charger.
